When changing printer toner, one’s first priority is often getting the printer running as quickly as possible to finish the project at hand. But it’s best to slow down and take the time to follow necessary safety precautions.

While printer toner itself isn’t a health hazard, its fine powder in high concentration can be. This powder can stay in the air for quite a while, and is similar to dust when it comes to its effects on our body, resulting in irritations like sneezing and coughing. Add any respiratory conditions like bronchitis or asthma and these effects worsen.

How can this dust become airborne? You’d be surprised at how easy it is. Improper disposal of printer toner in waste baskets can quickly spread dust through the air. Machine spills can cycle through the ventilator fan. Over-filled waste toner compartments can overflow within the machine.

Some laser printer toners are considered carcinogens, or cancer causing, increasing the risk of those individuals facing extremely heavy and long-term exposure. Nevertheless, typical office and personal use is deemed safe.

So take precautions. Vacuum, don’t sweep or brush, spilled toner dust. Clean up desktops or surfaces with a damp cloth. Should toner get on your hands, wash them thoroughly and immediately with soap and cold water, which keeps your pores closed and protects your hands from becoming stained. Avoid any contact with your eyes or mouth, and never ingest. To play it extra safe, put the toner in a zipped plastic bag to avoid possible dust emissions.

If you experience shortness of breath or persistent coughing, stop working with the printer toner, if applicable, and get fresh air immediately. Then seek medical attention if your symptoms persist.

With a computer printer sitting on most office desks – both at home and at the office – most users have come to understand the role of the printer toner. But, in most cases, the extent of our knowledge is limited to knowing when and how the printer toner cartridge must be changed. And change it we do, without having any real understanding of how it functions within our printer.

Printer toner contains the ink – whether in liquid or powder form – that allows our computer documents to come to life so that we may hold them in our hand. When we choose the print option from our computer, a signal is sent to the printer, and ink – of all necessary colors – is released onto our papers reproducing exactly the document we constructed on our computer.

Each printer comes equipped with compatible printer toner. Depending on the volume with which we print, the printer toner will have to be changed periodically or more frequently. In this case, we purchase replacement printer toner – which in many a case can be an expensive proposition.

Of course when replacing the printer toner most people turn to the printer manufacturer. The specific printer toner that is compatible with your printer comes with a product number that will help you easily and conveniently locate a replacement. While this can be a more pricey option then purchasing a generic alternative, you are sure to get the quality that your printer needs. Lower quality printer toner, while always less expensive, can seriously clog and damage your printer.

That is not to say, however, that you can not find quality printer toner at reasonable prices. There are generic brands that offer superior quality at a more affordable cost. The key is ensuring that you are dealing with a reputable company that will stand behind the products they sell.

Printer toner is an inevitable part of printer ownership. Take your time to learn what works and what prices you can find so that you affordably address your printer needs.

A question people frequently ask is “which brand of printers is the best?” The main manufacturers for inkjet and laser printers are Hewlett Packard, Epson, Canon, Brother, Lexmark, and Dell. Without picking one clear winner, here is a rundown of each one and some pros and cons of each:

Hewlett Packard - there is a reason that this name is synonymous with inkjet printers, laser printers and inkjet cartridges in general. HP has long been the leader of the printing industry in terms of size and selection of their machines and printer ink. But just because HP is the biggest does not mean they are the best. Something that has grown in popularity is individual printer ink cartridges for each color. From both an environmental and an economical standpoint, people like the idea of just replacing one individual color when it runs out instead of having to buy a whole new cartridge. This is something that HP was slow to adapt and they just recently introduced it on some of their Photosmart printers. At the same time, HP has also been decreasing the amount of ink in their cartridges. Their previous printer cartridges held anywhere from 20-40 ml of ink, while their newest cartridges hold as little as 5 ml in some cases. The cost of printing can still be low for HP users who do their own refilling, but it will mean more frequent refills for customers. So, as a trade-off for a vast selection and other benefits, you must consider the long term costs of operating an HP printer before buying.

* Pros - availability, dependability, name recognition
* Cons - no individual ink cartridges on almost all models, long term costs

Epson - along with Canon, Epson spearheaded the do-it-yourself photo printing movement with their collection of Stylus Photo printers. With Epson printers, you are going to find a large selection of photo machines and a good amount of entry level and high end machines. Epson has a limited number of multifunction inkjet printers, but the models that they do have are usually pretty popular and well-received. Based on customer feedback over the years, we have found that some Epson printers can require a little more maintenance than their counterparts in regards to running cleaning cycles for the print cartridges. So, this is something to consider when buying an entry level model from Epson. One downside with Epson is that you are unable to refill their ink cartridges.

* Pros - good photo printing, individual ink cartridges
* Cons - some maintenance issues, can’t refill cartridges, machine may not last forever

Canon - Typically, Canon users are the most loyal to their brand. There was a period when Canon had a relatively small selection compared to other major brands, but the inkjet printers that they did have were always very popular. Most of the time, the top photo printer on the market will be a Canon model. For a while now, Canon has had individual ink tanks for their machines, and in general they have the lowest overall cost per page. Although their selection of inkjet and photo printers has grown recently, Canon still seems to prefer quality over quantity. So just know that although you might see a limited number of Canon printers in your local stores, what is available is likely of top quality. One downside is that there are some Canon inkjet cartridges that cannot be refilled. So for the newer machines the only product available is Canon brand ink.

* Pros - excellent photo printing, reliability
* Cons - some lack of selection/availability of machines

All Others - the three other main manufacturers of printers are Dell, Lexmark and Brother. Dell has become a big player in the market, simply because of their ability to sell directly to such a large number of people. Both Lexmark and Dell (who has Lexmark manufacturer products for them) tend to focus on inkjet and multifunction machines, so if you are looking for a photo printer then they are most likely not the manufacturers for you. Lexmark does have a selection of some quality all-in-one machines, but both the machines and the products for them can be hard to find. Also, Lexmark/Dell currently do not have individual ink tanks for their machines, so even with our remanufactured cartridges the cost of ink can be as high or higher than Hewlett Packard’s. The good news is that you are able to use ink refill kits on Dell/Lexmark ink cartridges or have them recycled, so there are some benefits to their cartridges. Brother tends to focus more on laser printers and fax machines, so their selection for home users is pretty limited. Like Lexmark, they do manufacturer some quality all-in-one machines, but their lack of selection and availability is one downside.

Cleaning a laser printer, fax, or copier of laser toner can be easy, provided you know what you’re doing and use the right tools. This article will share with you some simple tips to help you clean your laser printers of laser toner like a pro.

A word to the wise: Before I begin, I’d like to stress that this article is intended only to assist you with basic cleaning of the laser toner from your laser printer. If you’re unsure of your ability to perform any sort of printer maintenance, or if performing such maintenance will void the printer’s warranty, you should contact a qualified service professional.

Some safety issues: Though laser printers come in various shapes and sizes, they all use laser toner (that messy black powder). While cleaning your laser printer, the last thing you want is to have laser toner in your lungs or on your skin. The tips provided in this article should help reduce the chance of you being bathed in laser toner while cleaning your printer.

Laser toner particles are so fine that they can take more than fifteen minutes to settle if they become airborne, make that hours if you have fans or air-conditioners circulating them through an office. To avoid inhaling laser toner particles, try to keep the air in the cleaning area stable and leave the printer area for several minutes after cleaning. When you return, move slowly, open all windows, and begin vacuuming any laser toner from the floor, tabletops, and so forth.

Another dangerous area common to all laser printers is the fuser-roller compartment. The fuser roller gets extremely hot during the printing process and is usually covered for safety. Burns can occur, however, if you accidentally uncover and touch the roller. I recommend that you leave your printer off for at least one hour before cleaning it of laser toner.

As with all electrical equipment, make sure that the power cable is unplugged before you begin any work.

Here are the basic tools you need to clean the laser toner from the laser printer:

-Vacuum
-Compressed can of air
-Wash cloth
-Mask
-Cotton Swabs
-Isopropyl Alcohol (99 percent pure)
-Paint Brush (soft bristle, about a half-inch wide)
-Latex gloves (optional)

Compressed air:
You can buy this in any department store or office supply store. Ranges in price from $3.00 to $10.00 per 10 oz. bottle. Use adequate ventilation please.

Mask:
You’ll want to prevent laser toner particles from entering your throat and lungs. While laser toner inhalation has not been proven to cause serious health problems, respiratory tract irritation can occur with exposure to large amounts of laser toner dust. Laser toner can also contain potentially hazardous compounds, such as styrene, ethyl benzene, and xylene isomers. Use a mask that filters both odors and fine particles, such as the ones used for painting and sanding. You can usually find these at local hardware stores.

Cotton swabs:
You can use the regular cotton swabs found in your local drugstore or those made especially for cleaning printers. The printer swabs come with six-inch-long sticks.

Isopropyl alcohol:
Do not use regular rubbing alcohol. Either use chemicals that are specifically designed to clean the heads of VCRs, cassette tapes, tape drives, and the like or use 99 percent pure isopropyl alcohol, which evaporates without leaving any residue.

Paint brush (soft bristle, about a half-inch wide):
This is used to brush out toner from tight crevices. Since bristles may fall out during the cleaning process, pull out any loose ones before you use the brush. I don’t recommend using toothbrushes.

Latex gloves (optional):
These must fit tightly on your hands since you want to maintain skin sensitivity. Drugstores usually sell them in boxes of 100. This is to keep your hands clean but if you don’t have them you can just wash up with soap and water afterwards.

Okay, let’s begin cleaning that laser printer of the laser toner. Now that you have the tools, it’s time to unplug the laser printer, let it sit for one hour, and then follow the steps below:

1. Put on your mask and latex gloves if you have them.

2. Open the printer and gently remove the laser toner cartridge or laser toner bottle.

3. Use your wash cloth and wipe the laser toner cartridge. Place the laser toner cartridge aside.

4. Use your vacuum to remove spilled laser toner from within the printer’s internal compartment. Try to prevent the vacuum’s nozzle from actually touching any of the printer’s internal surfaces.

5. Use your paintbrush to remove laser toner from any crevices. Use gentle motions and vacuum as necessary.

6. Many laser printers use very fine wires (called ‘corona wires’) that are often exposed. If your printer has such wires, take care to avoid vacuuming or brushing them. Breaking a corona wire can be a costly mistake. Dip a cotton swab into isopropyl alcohol and gently run it along the length of the wire. Also be sure to clean the underside of the wires. Never apply pressure.

7.Reinsert the laser toner cartridge, close the printer, reconnect the power cord, and you are done.

Avoid using the wash cloth inside the printer. Though you can use the wash cloth to clean the inside, I do not recommend it. There are many sharp points that can tear the cloth’s fiber and leave loose strands inside the printer.

OEM vs. Remanufactured Laser Toner Cartridges Although many people buy OEM Name Brand laser toner cartridges, little do they know, they really are remanufactured! Can you believe it? Seriously folks, why spend many more dollars on OEM’s when you can get THE SAME quality laser toner cartridges for half or less than half the price? When you buy an OEM laser toner cartridge, just look at the box! It says “Made of new and recycled materials”. The OEM companies want you to send your laser toner cartridge back to them , so they can remanufacture it , and sell it back to you as new! Buying remanufactured laser toner cartridges saves the environment. Millions of laser toner cartridges get dumped in landfills every year. So, please, save the environment, and save your money!

Happy Cleaning!

Are you one of those who tend to go cheap when buying a printer? Think first…In all your money saving effort, you will end up paying more in the long run.

Even though inkjet printers are very inexpensive and affordable, the cost of the replacement inks can drive up the overall cost over the time of ownership. Sometimes the cost of the ink is way expensive than the printer was.

The best way to go about buying a printer? Check the prices of the ink cartridges of the printer you want and find out how many pages each cartridge will print. After you figure out approximately how many pages you will print per month, you can determine the cost of the printer plus ink over the course of a year.

Think about getting individual cartridges if you know you will need one color more than others. This will be depending on the print jobs you will be making.

Manufacturers very often list faster print speed specifications on their packaging than we see when testing performance. A typical ink jet printer can produce two to four pages per minute of text and one full-page, 8.5-by-11-inch photo or graphic in two to three minutes.

Some color ink jets can print photos at a stage that approaches the quality of a professional photofinisher. If you intend to use your printer primarily for photos or graphics, look for printers that are built for that purpose.

If you plan to print mostly photos, look for photo printers with features such as a built-in PC Card slot, an LCD panel that allows you to view and print an image without using your PC, and bundled image-editing software.

If you print mostly text documents, consider buying an inexpensive black & white laser printer. These printers provide superior text quality compared with high-end ink jet printers. Some monochrome lasers cost as little as $200, making them a good deal for home users.

If you need to print a lot of text and high-quality graphics, buying a good photo ink jet printer in addition to an inexpensive monochrome laser printer could save you money on ink and maintenance costs in the long run as opposed to buying an ink jet to do it all.

Color laser printer toner cartridges are the most expensive consumable you can buy for a printer, but their yield is so much higher than an ink jet cartridge. In the end, color laser toner is less expensive on a per page basis.

Printer Troubleshooting
Page 2: Removing old print drivers

This step will allow you to remove old printer drivers from your computer. Old drivers are an issue very often, so replacing them fixes a lot of printing problems.

Terms:
Drivers- A piece of software that tells your computer how to use its parts

Remove old drivers:

1. Click Start > Control Panel
2. Open “Printers and Faxes”
3. Select the printer you are trying to use
4. Right click and delete this printer

Next: Installing New Print Drivers

Printer Troubleshooting
Page 3: Installing new print drivers.

Terms:
Local Printer- Printer attached to this computer
Network Printer- Printer on another computer or attached to router
Auto-Detect- Windows attempting to detect and auto-install your printer

To install drivers already included in Microsoft Windows XP:

1. Start > Control Panel
2. Open “Printers and Faxes”
3. Click “Add Printer”
4. Next, then select “Local Printer” and “Auto Detect”
5. If windows auto detects your printer, print a test page to try it

If windows did not detect your printer automatically, this is how to install manually

1. Start from the Add Printer wizard (above)
2. Select to install a Local Printer, but DONT select Auto Detect
3. On the first page, select your printer port. Use the glossary below for help
4. On the next page, select your printer MAKER and MODEL
5. If prompted, REPLACE existing driver, NOT use current driver
6. If your printer is not in the list, you will NEED to download drivers

Terms: (Types of printer ports/connectors)
LPT1 - Old printer cable, 25 Pins in 2 rows
USB - New printer cables, square connector
Ethernet - Network printers use this to print over networks

At this point, print a test page. If your driver install worked properly at this point it should work. Make sure all cables are plugged in, and that the printer is on and has paper. If this has not installed your printer, the next step explains how to download the proper drivers for your printer.

Next: Downloading newer drivers (if this step didnt work)

Printer Troubleshooting
Page 4: Downloading Newest Drivers

Having updated drivers is very important. Follow the correct link below for your printer brand, or continue using the drivers that came with windows (may be outdated). From these pages, you can search for drivers for your printer:

At this point, you have to check for new drivers:
For the home office especially, the all in one printer can revolutionize a work environment, bringing unsurpassed organization and functionality to all projects.

The all in one printer executes a variety of functions including printing from the computer, general copying, scanning, and faxing. Its compact size maximizes space; gone are the multitude of machines that would be required to complete all that an all in one printer handles on its own. You will find that this greatly increases your workspace - clearing up an ordinarily crowded desk.

Of course the downside of having an all in one printer that encompasses all of these job functions is that if one system breaks, they all break to a certain extent. Having one portion of the all in one printer repaired requires you to part with the entire machine. Also, users must operate only one system at a time with an all in one printer; for instance, you can not copy while you are also scanning. If your work environment is such that multiple functions must take place simultaneously then an all in one printer may not be appropriate for your needs.

The cost of an all in one printer is really quite reasonable considering how much it would cost you to purchase all of these machines separately. They range in brand, size, and price from store to store. So take the time to shop around; you may even want to investigate online deals through the Internet. There are many office supply websites that offer comparable, if not deeply discounted prices, on machines such as the all in one printer. You may want to consider purchasing an extended warranty on such a machine, as it carries the responsibility of multiple functions.

The all in one printer, like most products continuing to appear on the market today, is meant to provide a streamlined alternative to commonly “bulky” equipment. If it fits your particular needs, you will find it to be an essential part of your home office.

To produce thousands of copies of a fifteen page brochure at a rate of one page per minute with men working 24 hours a day would perhaps take over a week. But to produce the same quantity of brochures using your desktop printer would take over a decade! Clearly, desktop printing is not really an option in terms of cost, quality and speed. Hence, when you need large volumes of brochure or catalogs to be printed, it is perhaps a good idea to let the professional handle the job for you. There are, however, several things you need to consider in choosing the commercial printer for your particular print job.

Perhaps one of the things you need to consider is the kind of printing process used by the printer. Do they use offset printing or maybe digital technology? Is letterpress and screen printing also available? After you have decided on which printing process to use, you now have to determine which printer has the right equipment. Find out the number of colors they can handle, how long they can do the print job and what other equipment and services do they offer. Also, find out what kind of print job each printer specializes and what types of binding and folding equipments they use.

But aside from determining which kind of printing method and printing equipment is appropriate for you, it is also essential to know what kind of workers will work with the print job. Understand that although the printing company has the right equipment and printing technique it does not mean that the equipments and facilities will make great print jobs. Look for samples of work of these printers and focus more on their printing technique not merely on their design process. Also, look for clean colors, smooth text and focused images and graphics.

It is also a good idea to visit the printer to get a good feel of who you will be working with. And when you meet them face to face, ask them what you want to know about their service. You can ask questions such as how many presses they have and what are the capabilities of each; how long they have been in the business; what software they accepts and what kind of payment they receive. You can also ask their previous customers for feedbacks to know if they are able to meet their customer’s printing needs. It is essential to know this information ahead of time so you would not regret your choice later on. When you are able to find the right commercial printer, they will be able to make your printing job look great.

Samsung has long been a global leader in home electronics and digital media. Samsung digital TVs, computer monitors, DVD players, notebook PC, mobile phones, and home appliances are one of the most popular brands in the market. But when it comes to laser printer, which names appear in your mind? HP, Brother, Canon, Epson or Xerox? How about a Samsung laser printer? Quietly, Samsung is developing new printer technologies and expanding her share in the IT industry.

Samsung has manufactured a wide selection of black & white, color, and multifunction printers for home and business. Samsung printers are not only available at affordable price (the cheapest model is just over $100) but also provide some unique features that are only found in high end models from their competitors.

Most Samsung printer models have a toner saver button and built-in automatic duplexing. With built-in duplexing technology, you can print on both sides of the paper error free. Both of these features allow you to save printing and paper cost. In addition, high yield Samsung toner cartridge is available for many models so the printing cost per page can be further reduced.

Their new CLP-510/510N series printers are also built with a patented technology, NO NOIS (Non-Orbiting Noiseless Optic Imaging System). With this special design, the toner cartridges are fixed securely in place during operation rather than in constant rotation as in other color laser printers. The benefits of NO NOIS are that the printer can operate quietly and reliably and changing individual color cartridges is also much easier.

Samsung printers also provide fast printing (up to 25 ppm on black & white printing) and high resolution (1200 dpi). There are a lot of other optional features, such as wireless capabilities, expanded RAM, and second paper cassette, etc.

With the competitive price and advanced features, there is no surprise that Samsung printers have won many awards, including Bonafidereviews.com’s Editor’s Choice award, the CRN test center recommended award and Computer Times Editor’s Choice award.

So if you are purchasing a new laser printer, compare Samsung with other popular brands. You may get a great deal on a small budget.

A laser printer is a ordinary kind of computer printer that project top quality text and graphics on paper. Laser printers follow a xerographic printing course besides are different from the majority of photocopiers in that the figure is produced by directly scanning a laser beam across the printer’s internal drum. The illuminator of the laser modifies the electrical charge on the drum wherever it hits. The drum is then rolled through a reservoir of toner, wich is taken up by the charged parts of the drum. At last, the toner is transported to the paper by a mix up of heat and pressure. This is also the method copy machines work.

One of the top features of laser printers is their resolution coming from 300 dpi at the low end to 1,200 dpi at the high end. Laser printers reproduce very nice quality print and are capable of printing an almost unlimited variety of fonts. So whats the reason to have a laser printer instead than a more low cost inkjet printer? The significant features of laser printers are speed, precision and economy. A laser could move very faster, so it can “write” with much bigger speed than an ink jet. And because the laser beam has an unvarying diameter, it could draw more precisely, without spilling any overflow ink.

Laser printers tend to be a lot more expensive than inkjet printers, yet it does not cost too much to keep them working — toner powder is not expensive and lasts a long time, while you could use up overpriced ink cartridges very fast. This is for what reason offices commonly use a laser printer as their “work horse,” their machine for printing long text files. In most models, this mechanical mastership is complemented by more advance processing efficiency. A typical laser-printer controller could serve everybody in a tiny off

I recommend that you buy a laser printer if you print a lot of work continually or you work in an office where is required to print everything, because you are going to save a lot of money on ink. The ink of the ordinary printers cost to much and its not necesary unless you require to print with color.
